When students travel abroad, they learn far more than a new language. Exposure to different opinions, heritages and points of view broaden horizons more than any singular classroom experience can provide. Travel teaches students much about the way the world works. Learning that not everybody works, plays, eats and socializes in the same way gives students a respect for world cultures that they cannot get any other way.
We rarely realize how much our home culture influences who we are as people until we are faced with different ways of living. Daily commuting, meals, worship and leisure activities are different everywhere a student travels. The student no longer sees a right or wrong way of meeting life’s needs, but sees a multitude of human solutions to common situations.
Traveling and studying abroad helps a student step outside their comfort zone and fully realize their potential. Once they are unlocked from the belief that there is only one way to live, they can learn to live more fully and completely.
Removed from the security and comfort of home, a student faces the first big step toward freedom and independence. They can explore new ways of seeing people, places and things. They will glean new insight on family, friends and associates. They will be better able to appreciate the differences among people and less likely to be critical of others.
When faced with challenges later in life, they will have an abundance of resources from which to examine solutions. They won’t have to depend on the narrow viewpoints of the one city in which they grew up. The more places you can visit and explore the more you will learn about how humans can adapt to almost any environment or situation.
